Oceaneering creates Zika Virus tool for your company's GIS system

Posted by Chris Leslie

Last week both the Department of State (DOS) and Department of Defense (DOD) issued statements regarding the importance of addressing the international outbreak of the Zika virus:

DOS - Zika virus
The Department of State (DOS) issued a notice stating that it has determined that an international outbreak of the Zika virus is sustained, severe, and is spreading internationally, and that it is in the national interest to respond to the related Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Exercising its authority with respect to the Zika virus allows funds made available in the bilateral economic assistance accounts in the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2015 to be used to respond to the Zika outbreak. 81 Fed. Reg. 30597
DOD - expansion of Zika virus surveillance
The Department of Defense (DOD) issued a news release stating that it is providing $1.76 million in additional funding to military laboratories to expand Zika virus surveillance worldwide and assess the virus' impact on deployed service members' health and readiness.
In response to the original Marine Safety Information Bulletin released by the Coast Guard on February 4th of this year, Oceaneering developed a Zika virus monitoring tool that can be integrated into your companies existing GIS system.

What does this mean for you?

  • Daily awareness of reported cases
  • Employee safety notifications for travel based restrictions
  • Analysis of data in reference to vessel and flight movements into and out of your office regions
  • Shipping and logistics awareness

Like the Ebola virus, providing an aggregated data set that is updated daily from news, WHO, CDC, and other sources is a valuable resource in your Health and Safety divisions.
